The Giza Museum, also known as the Grand Egyptian Museum is due to open for visitors at the end of 2020. The museum has been long awaited. It's existence is expected to draw more tourist attention and bring back the reputation of Giza as a must-see Egyptian city. The Grand Egyptian Museum is planned to be the largest archaeological museum in the world. Some of the pieces there will be exhibited for the first time veer, whilst others will be transported from the Egyptian Museum, which currently has 120,000 items on display. The Egyptian Museum is set to close down after the new one opens so make sure to visit it if you have planned a trip to Cairo.

With quite a modern architectural design, the museum was part of an architectural competition held in 2002 when 1557 entries from 82 countries submitted applications. Designed by Buro Happold, Heneghan Peng Architects and Arup, the building takes shape as a chamfered triangle. The front facade will be a translucent stone wall curved out from alabaster. On each side of the entrance doors, large artefact statues will be located to greet visitors into the atrium. While the front will be stunning, the interior will be nowhere near less sophisticated. The museology and exhibition design are left to Atelier Brückner.

The Grand Egyptian Museum lies on 50 hectares and will display the full Tutankhamun collection as well as other valuable pieces. The Statue of Ramesses II, estimated to be approximately 3,200 years old, is already in the museum, ready to be displayed. It is estimated that the progress is already at 90%. Pieces from different collections will be transported from storage spaces and museums in Luxor, Minya, Sohag, Assiut, Beni Suef, Fayoum, the Delta, and Alexandria.

Not just modern on the outside, the Grand Egyptian Museum will awe visitors with a combination of artefacts from the past and technology from the present. It is confirmed the museum is designed with the latest technology in mind, including virtual reality. It will also promote direct contact with other international museums as it will serve as a point of international centre of communication between museums.

If you want to visit one of the most breathtaking museums in the world, book your tickets to Cairo and plan your end of the year adventure in one of the most mystical countries on Earth. Egypt always manages to captivate our attention. It is a place of myths, legends, a land of kings and pharaohs and the Grand Egyptian Museum is the perfect way to bring it all in one place.
